There are times when form alone far exceeds accoutrement in aesthetic and/or marketplace value. This Namji doll, without the usual boatload of beads and bric-a-brac, admirably demonstrates this point., in my view. At 16 inches, it is a larger than average example of this particular Cameroonian style. Crescent shaped arms and legs can be found in other examples, yet here the artist renders them and the long neck with such elegance that they best stand alone, a testament to its presence as a masterful work of art. I remain grateful that no beads were added to this figure and its fine patina of age is original.
